Starting Therapy Doesn’t Have to Be a Mystery

For many people, the fear of the unknown is a big barrier to beginning therapy. This post will give you a gentle overview of what your first session might look like, so you can arrive feeling more prepared and less alone.

The First Session: A Space to Be Heard

Your first therapy session is about getting to know you—not putting you under pressure. You don’t need to prepare anything specific. Some people arrive with a list of things they want to discuss. Others simply say, “I don’t know where to start.”

Both are welcome.

The first session will also include checking any paperwork which will have been sent via email to complete in a way that suits you.

What the Therapist Will Ask

You might be asked questions like:

  • What brought you to therapy now?
  • Have you had therapy before?
  • What are you hoping to explore or change?

You’re always in control of how much you share.

The Role of Trust and Safety

The therapeutic relationship is built over time. You don’t need to “click” immediately or feel completely open in the first session. What matters most is whether the therapist feels like someone you could grow to trust.

What Therapy Isn’t
